In September, 2010 our Backpack Program began a partnership with the three Hilton Head Island elementary schools.
We began providing shelf sustainable nutriously sound meals that children could take home for the weekends.
The school social workers identify children who qualify for government subsidized lunches and, from that list select children for our program.
Food is delivered once a month to a site on the island. From there volunteers take the cases of food to three packing sites where another team of volunteers opens the cases, separates the packages and prepares for packing the food into plastic bags which will be delivered to the schools.
Another team of volunteers delivery the plastic bags to the schools.
Each week three volunteers purchase fresh fruit to deliver to each of the schools.
At the school the plastic bags are placed, one per week, into the backpacks. Under the supervision of the social workers, children pick up their backpacks to take home on Friday after school. Backpacks are returned to the school on Monday to be refilled the following Friday.
